Dear friend, transforming your work life requires shifting from a “work-first” mentality to one that values work-life integration, which focuses on flexibility and quality of life rather than just splitting hours 50/50.

Work is a big part of our lives. Well, most of us. An average person will spend about a third of their life at work.

It is up to us to individually figure out what works for us to figure out how to spend more time with the people who matter or doing things that we love.

What Does Work-Life Balance Looks Like?

Work-life balance looks different from person to person, and can be achieved through various strategies.

For me, I learned the hard way when I was in the corporate world. I used to take home work and I had an epiphany one weekend.

It occurred to me that I could let my staff do the work as part of their duties.

From that time, I always seek to balance my work with things that I love and enjoy, like walking, hiking, dancing and cruising.

Your Guide To Start Balancing Today

  • Create a consistent daily routine to end work, such as shutting down your computer, tidying your desk, or changing clothes.
  • Turn off notifications on email and messaging apps outside of set work hours.
  • If working from home, have a dedicated, physical space for work that you leave at the end of the day.
  • Treat personal appointments (hobbies, exercise, family time) as non-negotiable, just like work meetings.
  • Group similar tasks together and tackle them in focused, uninterrupted blocks to avoid multitasking and reduce decision fatigue.
  • Identify one major task to complete daily, tackling it first, to keep priorities clear and reduce stress.
  • Protect your capacity by politely declining non-essential projects at work or social obligations that do not align with your current priorities.
  • Get adequate sleep, eat nutritious food, and make time for exercise, which boosts focus and reduces burnout.
  • If possible, negotiate remote work or flexible start/end times with your employer to better suit your life.
  • Ensure your career offers moments of joy and fulfillment. If your job feels completely disconnected from your values, consider a role shift.
  • Don’t hesitate to ask for help or delegate tasks when feeling overwhelmed.
  • Take a lunch break away from your desk for at least 30 minutes.
  • Spend 5-10 minutes walking without your phone to reset your mind.
  • Dedicate the first few minutes of the day to yourself (reading, being in the present moment as you focus on your breathing) rather than rolling straight into a meeting.

You have to actively work towards achieving the balance you and your loved ones deserve.

If you are overwhelmed and struggling to start, coaching or therapy can provide personalized, actionable strategies.

Make it a day in which you begin to balance your work and your life.
