Dear friend, creativity is within everyone. And how do I know that? Think back to the time when you were a child, playing in the yard, using your imagination to make up stories and acting out dreams.  These were all creative acts.

I can remember when I was around nine or ten years old, I was fascinated by the idea of becoming a fireman. I watched them often at the fire station as they slid down the poles and jumped into those fiery red trucks on their way to either a house fire or a cane fire.

I was so obsessed with this thought, that my dad bought a very sturdy replica of one of those trucks as a Christmas gift that year. That truck was my companion for a number of years thereafter.

As I grew older, that obsession waned. However, something very interesting happened many years after. I was given the responsibility of evacuating the entire ground floor of the finance and commercial departments of Cable & Wireless, a Telecommunications Company in the event of a fire. This naturally led to me being trained by the fire department. So, even though I did not become a fireman, I still had an affinity with the role.

This is an example of how the creative process works.

The fundamental principle of creativity is that you express something. You must let the expressions flow.

You must be willing to allow things to be expressed that are not perfect or wonderful. Creative people are willing to make mistakes.

Almost all successful people say that they have had more failures than they have had successes. They have tried many things that have not always worked for them.

Some have been very disappointing, but they have continued to take risks and try again.

Creativity requires play. It requires fun. It requires a sense of adventure. Learn to look at things a little more lightly and not take them so seriously.

If we don’t take ourselves too seriously, we can have that adventurousness that allows us to explore new frontiers.

The purpose of cultivating our creativity is for our enjoyment. It is to feel the feeling of being a channel, allowing the creative force to come through us.

If we keep that focus on everything we do, we will begin to de-emphasize the necessity for doing things perfectly or producing an exact result.

We will begin to get the same kind of pleasure out of life that children do when they are spontaneously moving with their energy and doing what they feel.

Until next time, make this a month in which you are living your life to the fullest.
